Application Technique

Inspect packaging and expiration.

Sterile IV and suction consumables require intact sterile packaging and unexpired lot. Any compromise = discard.

Prime IV tubing.

Prime with the ordered solution to eliminate air, then attach to the patient. Use clamped, closed technique throughout.

Set suction to ordered pressure.

Wall suction: 80–120 mmHg for adult airway; lower for pediatric. Exceeding pressure damages mucosa.

Apply gel sparingly.

A small amount of ultrasound or ECG gel is sufficient. Excess gel contaminates probe/electrode contact surfaces and wastes supply.

Dispose as contaminated waste.

Used canisters, tubing, and liners go to red-bag biohazard waste. Never pour suction contents down a drain.

  • Do not exceed wall suction pressure ordered — mucosal trauma and hypoxia risk
  • Never reuse single-patient IV tubing or suction liners — cross-contamination risk
  • Do not use enteral feeding tubing with IV ports — ISO 80369 connectors exist specifically to prevent this
  • Check expiration on sterile packs before use

Are these IV tubing sets compatible with my pumps?

IV tubing compatibility is pump-specific. Most gravity sets are universal; pump-set cassettes are pump- and model-matched (Alaris, Baxter, Hospira, etc.). Verify set compatibility with your pump model.

What suction pressure should I use for airway suctioning?

Adult wall suction for airway: 80–120 mmHg. Pediatric: 60–100 mmHg. Neonatal: 60–80 mmHg. Higher pressures cause mucosal trauma and hypoxia. Always set to the lowest effective pressure.

What's the difference between ECG and ultrasound gel?

ECG gel is conductive and low-impedance to carry electrical signal between skin and electrode. Ultrasound gel is acoustic — matched to tissue impedance to transmit sound waves. They are not interchangeable.

Can I empty suction canisters down the drain?

No. Suction contents are biohazardous regulated medical waste. Use a disposable liner system or a closed-solidifier system for emptying — never pour to drain or to unprotected waste.

Do you carry ISO 80369 enteral safety connectors?

Yes — ISO 80369-3 (ENFit) enteral connectors prevent misconnection between feeding and IV lines. This is the standard for new enteral equipment and is required by many health systems.
